Relational observables in 2d quantum gravity

چکیده
Local observation is an important problem both for the foundations of a quantum theory of gravity and for applications to quantum-cosmological problems such as eternal inflation. While gauge invariant local observables can’t be defined, it has been argued that appropriate relational observables approximately reduce to local observables in certain states. However, quantum mechanics and gravity together imply limitations on the precision of their localization. Such a relational framework is studied in the context of two-dimensional gravity, where there is a high degree of analytic control. This example furnishes a concrete example of some of the essential features of relational observables. ⋆ Email address: [email protected] † Long-term address.

Relational Observables in Gravity: a Review
We present an overview on relational observables in gravity mainly from a loop quantum gravity perspective. The gauge group of general relativity is the diffeomorphism group of the underlying manifold. Consequently, general relativity is a totally constrained theory with vanishing canonical Hamiltonian. This fact, often referred to as the problem of time, provides the main conceptual difficulty...
متن کاملGround State of 2d Quantum Gravity and Spectral Density of Random Matrices
We compute the exact spectral density of random matrices in the ground state of the quantum hamiltonian corresponding to the matrix model whose double scaling limit describes pure gravity in 2D. We show that the non-perturbative effects are very large and in certain cases dominate the semi-classical WKB contribution studied in the earlier literature. The physical observables in this model are t...
متن کاملConformal Equivalence of 2d Dilaton Gravity Models
We investigate the behavior of generic, matter-coupled, 2D dilaton gravity theories under dilaton-dependent Weyl rescalings of the metric. We show that physical observables associated with 2D black holes, such as the mass, the temperature and the flux of Hawking radiation are invariant under the action of both Weyl transformations and dilaton reparametrizations. The field theoretical and geomet...
متن کاملQuantum reference frames and deformed symmetries
In the context of constrained quantum mechanics, reference systems are used to construct relational observables that are invariant under the action of the symmetry group. Upon measurement of a relational observable, the reference system undergoes an unavoidable measurement ‘‘back-action’’ that modifies its properties. In a quantum-gravitational setting, it has been argued that such a back-actio...
متن کاملQuantum geometry of 2 d gravity coupled to unitary matter
We show that there exists a divergent correlation length in 2d quantum gravity for the matter fields close to the critical point provided one uses the invariant geodesic distance as the measure of distance. The corresponding reparameterization invariant two-point functions satisfy all scaling relations known from the ordinary theory of critical phenomena and the KPZ exponents are determined by ...
